PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana National Guard’s State Medical Command held a change of command ceremony at LANG Training Center Pineville, where Col. John Merrell passed the mantle of leadership to Col. Katrina Lloyd, Sept. 8.

“As you know, with this position comes higher expectations, and you’ve had a great person to follow to keep those traditions,” said Maj. Gen. Thomas Friloux, the adjutant general of Louisiana, addressing Lloyd, the incoming commander of MEDCOM, a position she first held in 2018-2021. “I have no doubt that you will continue to give the same excellent leadership that Col. Merrell did.”

After 10 years as an enlisted combat medic and attaining the rank of sergeant, Lloyd commissioned through the Officer Candidate School as a second lieutenant in 1996. A nurse practitioner, Lloyd serves full-time as the LANG state surgeon, alongside her role as commander of MEDCOM.

“I am deeply thankful for your support and the support of so many throughout my career, from the military, as well as the local community. I appreciate you,” Lloyd said. “I’d like to congratulate Col. Merrell for a job well done. The morale and energy of our medical detachment and our A Med Team across the State are high, and I appreciate the commitment to ensuring a smooth transition.”

Merrell, who has held command of MEDCOM since November 6, 2022, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in recognition of his dedication and service to the unit.

“Congratulations on a successful command, job well done,” said Friloux, addressing Merrell. “You’ve accomplished some great things with your team during your time in command.”

“I am truly honored to have been allowed this opportunity to serve as your commander,” Merrell said. “Any success of MEDCOM is a reflection of your professionalism and selfless service.”
